What is the definition of MSME according to the Government of India?

  • CGTMSE (Credit Guarantee Fund Trust for Micro and Small Enterprises): Provides collateral-free loans to MSMEs.
  • MUDRA Yojana: Offers microfinance through different stages—Shishu, Kishor, and Tarun.
  • CLCSS (Credit Linked Capital Subsidy Scheme): For technology upgrades.
  • ZED Certification Scheme: Promotes Zero Defect, Zero Effect manufacturing for quality and eco-friendly products.
  • Procurement Policy: Mandates government and PSUs to procure a certain percentage of goods and services from MSMEs.
  • Udyam Registration Portal: Simplified registration for availing multiple benefits like subsidies, bank loans, and tax exemptions.

These schemes are aimed at promoting ease of doing business and enhancing the competitiveness of MSMEs.

How is an enterprise classified as Micro, Small, or Medium?

An enterprise is classified as Micro, Small, or Medium based on its investment in plant and machinery or equipment and annual turnover, as per the updated definition by the Ministry of MSME:

  • Micro Enterprise:
    • Investment ≤ ₹1 crore
    • Turnover ≤ ₹5 crore
  • Small Enterprise:
    • Investment ≤ ₹10 crore
    • Turnover ≤ ₹50 crore
  • Medium Enterprise:
    • Investment ≤ ₹50 crore
    • Turnover ≤ ₹250 crore

This classification helps determine eligibility for various government benefits and schemes such as subsidies, priority sector lending, and tax benefits.

What documents are required for MSME registration?

The MSME( Udyam) enrollment  process is  fully paperless and grounded primarily on Aadhaar authentication. still, the following documents or details are  generally  needed   Aadhaar Number of the business  proprietor or authorized signatory   visage of the business(  obligatory for companies,  hookups, LLPs, etc.)   Business Name and Type( Proprietorship, Partnership, Pvt. Can an existing business apply for MSME registration?

Yes, being businesses that meet the MSME type criteria can apply for registration under the Udyam Registration portal. In fact, all previously registered enterprises under EM – Part II or Udyog Aadhaar were advised to migrate to the new system launched in July 2020. The process is simple Visit the Udyam Registration Portal. Choose the option for “ For those formerly having registration as UAM. ” Enter details analogous as Aadhaar, visage, and corroborate with OTP. How can MSMEs avail loans under the Credit Guarantee Fund Trust Scheme (CGTMSE)?

The Credit Guarantee Fund Trust for Micro and Small Enterprises (CGTMSE) is a flagship scheme of the Government of India, launched by the Ministry of MSME and SIDBI (Small Industries Development Bank of India). It aims to provide collateral-free credit to Micro and Small Enterprises (MSEs), encouraging entrepreneurship and supporting the growth of small businesses.

Under this scheme, loans up to ₹2 crores can be availed without any collateral or third-party guarantee, as the trust itself guarantees a significant portion of the loan amount to the lending institution in case of default.

✅ Procedure for MSMEs to Apply for Loans Under the CGTMSE Scheme:
1. Set up the Business & Register as an MSME
Ensure your enterprise is registered on the Udyam Registration Portal and qualifies as a Micro or Small Enterprise.

Maintain proper business documentation, including business plans, financial statements, and projections.

2. Approach a CGTMSE Member Lending Institution (MLI)
Contact a bank or NBFC that is listed as a CGTMSE Member Lending Institution. Almost all public and private sector banks in India are registered under this scheme.

Submit your loan application along with required business documents (PAN, Aadhaar, GST, project report, etc.)

3. Bank Sanctions the Loan and Applies for Guarantee
Once the bank is satisfied with your business model and viability, it sanctions the loan.

Instead of demanding collateral, the bank applies for credit guarantee coverage under CGTMSE on your behalf.

4. Guarantee Fee and Annual Service Fee
The borrower (or sometimes the bank) pays a one-time guarantee fee (usually around 1%–1.5% of the sanctioned amount) and an annual service fee for continued coverage.

These charges vary depending on the loan amount and the type/location of the enterprise (e.g., women entrepreneurs, North East states, etc., may receive concessions).

5. Disbursement of Loan
The loan is disbursed to the MSME as per the sanctioned amount.

The CGTMSE trust provides up to 75%–85% guarantee coverage to the bank in case the borrower fails to repay.
